A Family Legacy at Haberdashers’ Monmouth School

Professor Jimmy Choo’s connection to Haberdashers’ Monmouth School is deeply rooted in his family. His great-nephews currently attend the school, following in the footsteps of their father, Jonathan Gaylard, an alumnus who attended as both a day student and a boarder. During the Covid pandemic, Jonathan and his wife, Lucy Choi, decided to move from London to the Monmouthshire countryside to establish a better work-life balance for their family. Lucy reflects, “Our positive experience with the school played a significant role in our decision to move. We currently work in London, and this transition offered the quality of life and sense of community we wanted for our boys.”

Having explored numerous options across London, the family ultimately returned to Jonathan’s alma mater. Lucy shares, “We looked everywhere in London, but Haberdashers’ Monmouth had the facilities, academic support, and environment we wanted for our boys. It’s a wonderful place for them to grow up.”

Inspiration from a Fashion Icon

Professor Choo’s involvement with Haberdashers’ Monmouth began two years ago when he led a workshop for younger students, including his great-nephew’s class in Prep. The creativity and enthusiasm of the students left a lasting impression, sparking his desire to return in a more formal capacity. Now, as Patron of Fashion, Design, and Textiles, he brings his expertise, industry knowledge, and passion for education to the school. Reflecting on his initial visit, Professor Choo commented, “I was captivated by the energy and creativity of the children and the inspiring atmosphere at Haberdashers’ Monmouth. This is a special place, and I’m excited to support these talented young people.”

An Unmatched Opportunity for Aspiring Designers

With Professor Choo’s guidance, students at Haberdashers’ Monmouth have a unique opportunity to learn directly from one of the fashion industry’s most celebrated names. His mentorship, access to the Jimmy Choo Academy, and insights into the global fashion world provide invaluable support for students exploring the creative arts. Aspiring designers gain first-hand perspectives on the industry, from concept development to craftsmanship, under the guidance of a globally recognised leader in fashion.

“Professor Choo’s guidance is a phenomenal asset for our students,” said Simon Dorman, Executive Head. “Our Fashion and Textiles programme is like no other, with students now receiving mentorship from a global fashion icon, to add to the outstanding teaching and new Textiles studio. It’s a dream come true for any aspiring designer, and we couldn’t be more excited for the future.”
