Altoona Curve fans attend a team event on Monday night at Levity Brewing in Altoona Monday night.

Baseball season inches nearer with each day and members of the Altoona Curve organization were delivering some exciting news to fans at Levity Brewing Monday night.

The Curve front office spent the evening announcing what fans can expect at Peoples Natural Gas Field this season at their inaugural First Pitch event.

They announced a bevy of the promotions and special events for the season in front of dozens of fans who came to Levity Brewing in Downtown Altoona for the occasion.

“We’re trying to come up with a unique way to announce all the promotions where the fans can be a part of it as well,” Curve general manager Nate Bowen said. “We did one at Baker Mansion in the past, but that was really just like a media only event.”

Curve fans showed their excitement as the promotional schedule was revealed which included later game times for firework nights as well as bobble heads and other giveaways.

The most cheers came as three new uniforms were unveiled including a new, bronze alternate jersey, a new identity as the Blair County Crickets — an ode to the rich baseball history at Cricket Field and a special Altoona Rail Kings jersey and cap which will be worn for Thursday home games.

While additional uniforms and other promotions will be added in the future, Monday’s event was the culmination of an off-season of hard work and brainstorming from those within the Curve organization.

“Everything’s a team effort,” Curve director of marketing, promotions and special events Mike Kessling said. “It’s a lot of hard work, but when you have the amount of people that come out and, everybody wants to come and see what we’re doing. That makes you feel good, and it makes all the work that we put in just doing a little event like this that much more special.”

Some of the more notable special appearances that will be held this season include retired professional hockey player and former Pittsburgh Penguin Darius Kasparaitis. He is slated to appear on Thursday, Aug. 7, when the Curve take on the Harvard Yard Goats.

He will be available to meet fans and sign autographs. Fans will also get a chance to purchase meet-and-greete packages with the one-time Penguin.

Those who missed out on the event can see the unveilings and other additions to the game-day experience at CurveFest this Saturday. It runs from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at PNG Field and provides fans with their first opportunity to purchase single-game tickets for the season.
