The University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus is undergoing a transformation this fall, within its natural autumnal beauty and the outfits of its students. As the cozy season approaches and the weather gets cooler, students shake up their outfits, adding new pieces into the mix to keep themselves warmer and spice up their look.

For some students, fall is a great time to bring out the classic pieces that give them that comforting feeling. For freshman history major Allen Pankiewicz, the fall staple that he can’t resist is the flannel.

“I always love seeing how people layer things,” Pankiewicz said. “I’m a big layerer myself, so I love seeing people explore that and I love seeing how the styles change from summer to fall time.”

Layering is essential during the fall, as the weather can change drastically. For this reason, students have different garments in which they can both stay cozy in the morning and beat the heat in the afternoon.

“I can’t wait to bring out my fur coat,” junior mathematics major Jada Logans said.

Another large aspect is fall coloring, whether students aim to follow trends or go outside the box. While the classic colors are ideal to fit into the natural fall environment, students can also stand out by incorporating louder colors in a cohesive way.

“The normal fall colors are what they are, and those are very set, but I like when people sort of take those (colors) and do their own thing with it,” junior fine arts major Jobe Sullivan said.

Jada Logans has seen a rise in black and brown colors styled together in garments, along with honey tones in autumn hair trends.

Freshman graphic design major Nick Bushard wants to see brighter colors, such as purple and red, used for a more unique look. Both Bushard and Sullivan agreed that texture is an important factor when it comes to building a fall outfit in addition to coloring. They also want to see more textures this season to make fall outfits individualized to the person.

“Remember, at the end of the day, you are dressing for you and no one else. It is you that is wearing the clothes,” Bushard said.

For trend followers on campus, what is most likely to be seen according to Jada Logans and Pankiewicz is comfortable clothing, like athleisure and sweaters. The most common brands spotted are Lululemon for athleisure and Uggs for comfortable casual shoe wear.

“The athleisure vibe on campus works well, like going to-and-from classes and being in class,” senior mathematics major Nadjia Logans said.

For students who enjoy more of the experimental side of fashion and trends, the fall season gives them the freedom to express themselves.

“I just really like how experimental you can get with fall fashion because the weather’s changing so much. One day you can wear a normal summer-y kind of outfit (and) the next day, test out different layering, like accessories,” Pankiewicz said.

A great way to become more experimental with fashion is to look for inspiration from other students. Pankiewicz said that they weren’t into fashion before coming to UNL, but after arriving, they felt more inspired after seeing other students’ sense of style.

“So many people have such different styles around campus,” Pankiewicz said. “Coming here, I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh, I love so many people(‘s) sense of style’.”

Fall time fashion holds a hint of nostalgia and a sense of renewal. The autumn season is here for just a fleeting moment and dressing the part could make the experience more special.

“Have fun with fashion and put yourself and your person out there with the clothes you wear, because I think it’s a really good way to show your personality,” Sullivan said.
