A look back on this year’s fashion | Culture

This school year caught a glimpse of the return of denim-on-denim, a fierce revisit of leopard print, the emergence of the bows seen on everything and many more styles that took the fashion industry by storm.
Fashion trends catch college students’ attention mostly through social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and Pinterest, according to students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Avery Brost, a junior criminology and criminal justice major, said she tends to gravitate towards Pinterest when looking for fashion inspiration. She said that although she does not feel like she keeps up with fashion trends, she looks to Pinterest for inspiration for new outfits, and to build off of what she currently has in her closet.
TikTok “outfit of the day” videos, otherwise known as “OOTDs,” are common within the social media platform.
“I find them entertaining for the most part. I find an outfit that looks cute, fun and whimsical,” Brost said.
Brost’s favorite fashion trend right now is the coastal, beach-vibe aesthetic. This trend reminds Brost of the summer. She enjoys patterns that feature hues of blues, fruits or postage stamps.
“You can look forward to these trends because the summer is coming soon and there’s a new wave of fashion,” Brost said.
Courtney Leytham, a senior criminology and criminal justice major, looks for trends on social media platforms as well. She said TikTok and Instagram are her go-to apps for looking for new looks.
“If I’m looking for something specific then I would go look on those apps for it, but usually it’s just a video that pops up and it’s trending at the time,” Leytham said.
Her favorite trend from the school year was the surface of the Adidas Gazelle footwear. She said they are versatile and comfortable. She likes being able to wear them with dresses, sweat pants or dress them up with a nice outfit.
Another of Leytham’s favorites from this school year was leather jackets. She said they are an easy way to dress up casual outfits for a more elevated look, such as a plain t-shirt.
Leytham is excited to see that some older styles are coming back for the summer. Halter tops have been on her “for you page” on TikTok and caught her eye. She said they remind her of styles from a few years ago and is happy they are coming back.
Logan Servant, a junior journalism major, has enjoyed the return of low-top shoes on campus.
“If you look around, you’ll see a lot of people wearing shoes like sambas, low top blazers, low top Jordans, and it’s super nice to see. It’s refreshing. Free the ankles,” Servant said.
Servant said he gravitates towards interesting color-ways, where clothing items match each other and their colors stack like a sandwich.
Servant said he usually sees trends emerge from social media like TikTok. He also said that the presence of vintage pop-up shops also have a large influence on fashion on campus.
UNL students take on trends that circle online and adapt them to their everyday closets. This summer is bringing coastal styles to the midwest. Students can look out for pastels and light blue coastal European inspired fashion. Trends are always ever changing, so it will be interesting to see what emerges in the next few months.
