Jwala Gutta Slams Tarun Tahiliani For India’s Olympic Uniform: Subpar, Unkempt, Uncomfortable
3 min readParis, the city of love and fashion is hosting the Olympics this year and Indian players have commenced their journey to bag medals. This year’s tournament is not just a display of flawless sportsmanship but also an exuberant exhibit of craft and fashion. Every country has come out with elegant pieces representing their culture. However, the Indian uniform has been facing extreme backlash not just by the people but also by the players.
This year’s official Olympic uniform for Indian players is the first designer uniform crafted by Tarun Tahiliani. The uniform for women is a tri coloured saree with a white digital print on the borders, whereas for men it’s a white short kurta pajama with subtle print at the border and a white jacket adorned by a tricolour border. The designer aimed to display the country’s rich heritage and culture through the ikat designs but the designer failed to please not just the fans but also the players.

Taking it to Twitter, the former celebrated badminton player, Jwala Gutta shared her disappointment and said, “After not much of thinking..The garments which was made for the Indian contingent participating in Olympics this time has been a huge disappointment!! (Especially when the designer was announced I had huge expectations. First not all girls know how to wear a saree…why didn’t the designer use this common sense and make pre draped saree(which is in current trend)”

The player further pointed out the discomfort and impracticality of the attire and confessed, “The girls looked uncomfortable the blouse was of bad fit!! And second the colour and the print was so opposite of beautiful Indian!!! There was an opportunity for the designer to display the art of our culture through embroidery or hand paint!!” She further added, “It was a work of absolute mediocrity and looked shabby!!! I really hope the sports family stops compromising on quality for our sportspersons looks on court and off court!!!!”
Now, Tarun Tahiliani has come out in defence of his work and said, “It is not a couture show.” The designer further mentioned “This is what we Indians wear, and this is not meant to be a couture show, I stand by these uniforms. ” The fans tried really hard to understand the craft but failed to wrap their brains around it. With Italian uniforms being designed by Giorgio Armani and US uniforms crafted by Ralph Lauren, Tarun Thailiani’s display of ‘rich heritage and culture’ stands questionable.
